Activities:
  • As we waited for everyone to arrive, we did a word search and crossword puzzle related to the book.
  • We ate snacks we read about in the book: homemade bread with butter, cheese, and cookies.
  • We looked at a map of the setting of the book and talked about what happened in the different places shown in the map. You can find the map at this link: https://www.boxcarchildren.com/in-the-classroom/ Click on the red Download button, and then open the file titled "Teachers Guide." The map is on page 7 of the document.
  • We made little puppets out of people-shaped craft sticks. The girls each got four sticks and colored one for each of the four main characters.
  • We did a couple reader's theaters using the scripts available for download at this site: https://www.boxcarchildren.com/in-the-classroom/ Click on the red Download button, and then open the file titled "Student Worksheets." There are three reader's theater scenes in the last six pages of the document. The girls used their puppets while reading the scripts.
