- As we waited for everyone to arrive, we did a word search and crossword puzzle related to the book.
- We ate snacks we read about in the book: almonds, dates, raisins, oranges, danishes (to represent sugar tarts or frosted pastries), and hot chocolate. I also had carrots and apples but forgot to pull them out of the fridge. :)
- We played HedBanz. I used the headband pieces from the board game and then made cards with pictures of different characters from the story. (I used the book illustrations.) Because I don't know if it's copyright-appropriate to share those images here, I won't, but I can send the PDF of the cards to anyone who wants it.
- We made a horse craft. I got the idea from this site. I had a body/head shape ready on cardstock for each girl to cut out, and then they colored them whatever color they wanted. I used a 3/4-in punch to punch out the leg holes, and then the girls added a googly eye and yarn for the mane and tail.
- We talked a little bit about Ramadan and briefly looked at the picture book Lailah's Lunchbox by Reem Faruqi. (I would have read the book all the way through if we had time. It's a wonderful book.)
