Activities:
  • While we waited for everyone to arrive, the girls colored a cheongsam coloring page (a plain dress that they could color/decorate).
  • We ate snacks that we read about in the book--almond cookies and potstickers.
  • We did a story activity (similiar to something Cilla did in school in the book) where I took the girls to the other room one by one and had them give me a sentence or two for part of a story. The first girl started with whatever she wanted, then I read that line to the next girl who gave me a continuation, etc. until all the girls had contributed. Then the girls each illustrated their own line. Afterward, I read them the story they had written.
  • While the girls were taking turns being in the other room, they worked on some other activities--a Create Your Own Monster Fighter worksheet, a blank cereal box for them to design, and a blank page where they could draw their own family portrait.
  • At the end, I gave each girl a notebook and pencil to take home so they could also be a future author extraordinaire.
