Book: Wishtree
Author: Katherine Applegate
Activities:
- While we waited for everyone to arrive, the girls drew animals from the book. They also wrote wishes on strips of fabric and tied them onto a little plant.
- For snacks, the girls made trees out of pretzels sticks (thick and thin), grapes, and Reese's Pieces.
- The girls painted trees using a tree template and puff balls (attached to clothespins and dipped in paint) to make leaves.
- We also did a service project. I contacted a local organization that works with refugees (a local chapter of the International Rescue Committee) and asked about donations they could use. They always had a need for Bathroom Basic Kits, which included paper towels, toilet paper, and soap in a reusable bag. Before the book club, I created a signup genius list with the materials needed, and then the girls brought donations. As part of the night's activity, the girls helped assemble the bags with the needed materials. Then they made cards (paper, colors, stickers) for the recipients of the bags (things like "welcome to America").
